Map

BKM is our traditional 100 mile ride to Salisbury & this year returns to it's weekend slot to take advantage of quieter roads on the outbound leg.

Description:

A 100 mile ride to Salisbury and back devised as an introduction to long distance riding for PCTC members.

The route departs early from Havant and takes a relatively flat route out to Salisbury for breakfast, then returns via Stockbridge for lunch and Alresford for ice cream and then on to the current finish point at Denmead. The route after Salisbury is hilly.

Start Time:

We have a 5am start to make the most of daylight hours and to avoid the worst of the traffic on the Winchester Road heading out to Colden Common. There is the option of a 5.45am pick up at Wickham.

With an early start you will need warm layers to begin with and room to stow them as it (hopefully) gets hotter through the day.

Distance and Pace:

The complete route is 100 miles, plus your distance to the start and then home from Denmead. If you are used to 80 mile Club rides a century ride should be within your capability.

The ride is about endurance rather than pace, so it is not especially fast and we go at the speed of the slowest rider and we will have back markers. That said a minimum moving average speed is required to make the ride enjoyable for all participants and to get to the finish in a reasonable time. To give an indication our moving average on the 2021 ride was 12.5mph, although rides have been a little slower.

Of course speed is only part of the equation. After Salisbury the ride is undulating, with quite a few climbs. Typically we will stop to regroup at the top of climbs then set off once the last rider arrives to keep things moving, with maybe a longer stop every 3rd or 4th climb.

Food Stops:

The ride has regular stops along the route.

  • Otterbourne (40Km) Nissa Local Store - coffee & pastries
  • Salisbury (79Km) Wetherspoons – breakfast
  • Stockbridge (112Km) Picnic lunch – BYO or buy in the Co-op
  • Alresford (141Km) Ice Cream stop

You should bring at least one drinks bottle and keep it topped up. If it’s a hot day bring a second bottle. It’s also wise to have some spare food in your saddle bag.

Back Up Plan:

It’s worth considering how you would get home if you decide to leave the ride for any reason or in case you get separated from the group.

  • Study the route before the event.
  • Have a GPS with the route loaded and/or a paper map.
  • Think about where there are stations along the route or have someone you can call for a lift.

While the information above may seem extensive it is all very much common sense and is aimed at everyone having an enjoyable day out and arriving at the finish after 100 miles of good company and pleasant riding.

About faster rides

Our other rides go at the pace of the slowest rider or we will split the ride to accommodate a slower rider. 'Faster rides' go faster than other rides and people joining are expected to keep up.

We're not talking about professional or even 'club' riding speeds, but trying to ride at any speed faster than you can manage is an unpleasant experience.

If you want to join a faster ride, but uncertain whether you can keep up:

  • Consider trying one or two of our other rides classed as A (Demanding) or B (Hilly) first. If you're able to keep up without difficulty that's a good indication you're ready for a faster ride. The chances are you'll be riding with other members familiar with faster rides that can help you with your assessment.
  • In any case, contact the ride leader and discuss your experience to date with them. Bear in mind, however, that subjective assessments of average speed and cruising speed are notoriously unreliable even for those that routinely use cycle computers.

Before you join a faster ride, please review the route and prepare to make your own way back if you're struggling to keep up - and we all have bad days. We will not, however, intentionally drop slower riders; nor will we leave riders without first checking they are confident with getting back.
