This is the route we took in August 2017. There are hills at the start and towards the end but they OK for an easy ride. Most of the surface is tarmac but some sections of the old railway line are not so good. Quay Lane (north of Brading) is also a little rough and the worst section has been covered with loose hoggin (which is a skid risk).
We bought return tickets from the Gunwharf ferry terminal to Fishbourne and came back on the Fastcat from Ryde. As we've found before, that didn't cause a problem with the staff at Ryde.
The route goes via:
- Gunwharf ferry terminal
- Fishbourne ferry terminal
- Wootton Bridge
- Staplers
- Newport
- The old railway line cycle path to...
- Peddlers Café, then on to...
- Sandown
- Brading
- Quay Lane
- St Helens
- Nettlestone
- Seaview
- Ryde
- The Hard
- Ryde

This is the route I intend to use for the Cathedral Challenge rides while the south end of the Tipner Lake shared cycle path is closed. Note that you can follow the route in either direction.
At the time of my recce, there were no diversion signs.
My suggested route starts and finishes on the previous cycle path so - whichever direction you choose - you can continue on as normal.
There are some alternatives:
- Northern Parade (A3) has a shared pavement on the west side all the way from Matapan Road to Alex Way. The drop kerb at either end is a bit tricky to navigate, however.
- Instead of taking the loop through Alexandra Park, you can take a shorter route south of the Mountbatten centre. However, it means navigating through the car park.

This is the route of the new Butser Cutting cycle path.
It's 2.9 Km (1.8 miles) long, climbs 77 metres (South to North) and descends 98 metres - according to my measuring tools.
The route is entirely off-road (although some of it re-uses some the old A3 which is no longer open to cars) and an all-weather surface.
