Martyn Roberts talks about his recent trip.
The Taff Trail runs for approximately 60 miles from Cardiff to Brecon.
Most of the Trail is off road, making use of riverside embankments, disused railway tracks dating back to the industrial revolution, forest tracks and canal towpaths (pre-industrial revolution).
It’s a ride that’s got something for everyone. There’s rivers, mountains, canals, a national park, a heritage railway and lots of history; industrial history and at times a tragic history. It harks back to another age: an age of coal, iron and steam.
There’s also some modern history. The story of a road, the road from hell, that was conceived during Mrs Thatcher’s government, commenced during Tony Blair’s government and finally completed, 30 years later, under Kier Starmer’s government.
This presentation will explore the route of the Taff Trail and its history. For anyone who likes cycle touring (it is the CTC after all!) and history, industrial history – lots of it, this presentation is an absolute must.
