Map
Pewsey Camping Trip - 9th-10th July
(Outline Plan - subject to updates)
Overview
Depart Portsmouth Area from 9am Tuesday 9th July
Overnight Camp at The Bruce Arms Pewsey
Return to Portsmouth Wednesday 10th July
Details & Information
This ride is a bit different from our usual Tues & Wed rides. It should appeal to experienced cycle campers as well as those who have never tried it before.
The likely numbers and the type of ride will make the usual practice of one group following a ride leader impractical. Instead we are going to have a choice of start points and riders will set off in groups of 2-4, meeting up at the refreshment stops and the camp site.
Route notes and GPX tracks will be provided, but carrying a map and being able to navigate will be helpful.
Ride Leader/Co-Ride Leaders will keep track of who's on the road and complete a head count at Pewsey.
Camp Site
We will be staying at The Bruce Pub Pewsey. This is a Pub with it's own camp site, and comes recommended.
To keep things simple I will be asking Riders to make their own camp site booking, but I will ask for a list of names earlier in the year so that I can check there is sufficient space for us and give the Pub pre-warning.
Current cost is £6 for small tents
Route & Timings
Depart Havant, Widley Walk, (possibly other points) from 08:30am onwards in small groups
Coffee stop at Alresford Station (35Km), arrival and departure at your groups pace
Picnic lunch at Crofton Beam Engine, Kennet & Avon Canal near Burbage
Arrive Bruce Arms Camp Site (95Km) mid to late afternoon & pitch tents
Evening Meal
The Bruce Arms does not serve food, but there are various options:
a) Two pub restaurants in Burbage - 10 minute cycle ride
b) Various pubs & restaurants in Pewsey - 20 minute cycle ride
c) The Indian Restaurant in Pewsey will deliver to the Camp Site
d) Cook our own evening meal
Breakfast
Either do your own brew up and breakfast
or Head back to the café in Pewsey
Return Trip
Again we will depart in small groups and make our own way home, so that we do not have one large group on the road together.
For the more adventerous there is an option of returning via the Lions Den – Heading further West to Frome then riding through the Longleat Estate & home via the Wyle Valley & Salisbury. This is a really great route, but is over 100 Miles so probably not suited to everyone.
Some people are also planning to head down towards the New Forest for a 2nd Nights Camping
Camping Kit and Support
As we're CTC members I'm expecting most riders will be carrying their own lightweight camping kit. However I recognise that some members may not have access to lightweight kit or may not have suitable bikes and bike luggage. I'm exploring this possibility of having a car and driver to transport kit for riders if needed. This is provisional at present – any volunteers?
General
As above, a map and basic navigational skills will be useful
Riders will be responsible for making their own camp site bookings
Before the trip make sure your bike is in good repair for a 180Km round trip carrying luggage
Bring lights just in case

About Tuesday rides
The Tuesday rides are typically 60-80 miles at a moderately fast pace while maintaining the social nature of the Saturday and Wednesday rides. The rides will start at various locations to be determined by the individual ride leader.
