Map
This ride will be a few miles longer than the last silver challenge, but we will be stopping twice: in Wickham for elevenses and at the Bayside Cabin for lunch. That divides the ride into roughly 15 mile sections. We expect to get back to Havant around 4pm.
If you prefer, there is plenty of public seating at the lunch stop if you want to bring a packed lunch. Alternatively, there might be enough riders who want to carry on without stopping.
The first section is the hilliest. The hills are moderate, but we will do several of them. After that, and a few undulations, the ride becomes flat all the way back to Havant.
The final leg will take us across the Gosport Ferry. The standard two-trip charge is £5.10; Seniors £3.30. Bikes cost an extra £1.70. The 'return' section of the ticket can be used any time and in either direction, so don't throw it away. If you have an unused 'return' don't forget to bring it with you.
If you have registered for the Cathedral Challenge there is no need to book and you can ignore the 'wait list' status. Otherwise, if you'd like to join the ride, let us know; registered riders will take priority so we will be unable to confirm your booking until shortly before the ride.

Ride leader notes
I ride an electric assist gravel bike (Vitus E-Substance with Fazua mid motor). I am usually comfortable with overall distances of 60 miles at a medium pace, typically averaging around 11 mph. I enjoy the traffic free off-road or quiet back country roads routes. A few hills are OK, but avoid the more demanding ones, like Turkey island.
About Cathedral Challenge rides
We're running a series of rides for people who are:
- New to group cycling
- Haven’t cycled for a while
- Want to cycle a bit further than usual
They start with a short, 'get to know you' ride that includes a free bike check and progress through longer distances, tackling a series of challenges on the way:
- Bronze: Havant to Portsmouth cathedral and back
- Silver: Chichester cathedral and back
- Gold: Winchester cathedral and back
There's more detail and a registration form here.
Note that the Cathedral rides are subject to change and adaptation as we learn more about the challenge riders.
