In view of the ice warning I have decide to cancel this ride. Sorry - I really wanted to go but we have had several accidents in the past on ice and I think its the right thing to do. Will look at it again for next week.

My tried and tested route to Winchester. Elevenses at Cuppacheeno in West Meon (17 miles) then Tichborne, Alresford, Avington and Easton, under/round M3 junction 9 and into Winchester for lunch at the Cathedral cafe (34 miles). Return via Twyford, Bishops Waltham, Swanmore, Hambledon and Clanfield. Total 63 miles. Ascent 3545 feet, 1080 metres. Average speed around 12mph.

Chris will lead the return route.

Make sure that you have lights as we may be back after dark.

Ride leader notes

As I am still recovering from my accident early September 2025, I am going much slower with shorter rides. I am riding a recumbent to reduce the risk of falling. Text below is out of date.

On club rides I ride a road bike and prefer to lead all day rides. I aim for 55 - 60 miles in the winter and 65 - 75 miles in the summer (although there are exceptions). One of my bikes is an e-bike which i use on faster rides, so I can keep the pace up. My preferred speed is 12 - 13mph depending on amount of climbing. I record my speed on a Hammerhead Karoo bike computer and the speeds I give reflect what i have recorded over the past few months.

I 'm not keen on urban riding and prefer the countryside of the Downs to the north, west and east of us. Although I'm not a particularly good climber I don't shy away from hills as i think flat rides can be less interesting.

I sometimes lead morning only rides on a Friday for all-comers. On these rides I arrange groups to suit the pace of all riders.

I generally start my rides at the Spring Centre in Havant but will pick up on the route on request. I finish my rides here too although you are welcome to leave the ride elsewhere e.g.nearer to your home.

About Wednesday rides

Wednesday rides usually start from Havant with stops for elevenses, lunch and sometimes tea. If you're unable to keep up or have a mechanical problem, someone will be available to help you - although we obviously cannot guarantee to solve all problems.

Wednesday rides usually provide a range of options to riders as we'll try to arrange multiple rides with different paces, distance and degree of hilliness.

On Wednesdays it is likely that there will be several riders coming back to the Havant area after an elevenses stop - although they might not include a PCTC ride leader. If that is what you'd like to do, please consult the ride organiser before the day of the ride to ensure someone knows and is able to bring you back.
