It is a follow-up ride to our RETURN TO CYCLING (RTC) series and is an ideal introduction to riding in a group to gain confidence on the ro ad.\n\nIt is an easy paced fifteen mile ride around Portsea Island\, on bot h off road cycle track and minor roads\, avoiding traffic wherever possible . There are inevitably a few sections of busier road\, but these are wide\, easy to ride sections and a few quiet gravel paths as well.\n\nThe ride st arts at Hilsea Lines Cafe\, Hilsea Lido. It is suggested if driving to the start that you park at KING GEORGE V playing fields\, Cosham as parking at the lido is very restricted.\n\nThe route starts by heading south alongside the sea on off road paths to Alexandra Park\, before heading down minor ro ads and cycle paths of Stamshaw.\n\nExiting Stamshaw we use the underpass a t Rudmore roundabout and cycle paths again down Mile End Road before circli ng Portsmouth Dockyard to Unicorn Gate. Another underpass takes us to Victo ria Park and the short busy stretch crossing into Queen Street. In no time at all we are back on quiet back roads to St George's Church and square nea r The Hard.\n\nAnother busy crossing point at the car entry point to Gunwha rf Quays and a short busy stretch before again the back streets of Old Port smouth and onto Pembroke Gardens. Pausing to cross Pier Road\, we head down to Clarence Pier and the new Seafront Cycle Path with views over to the Is le of Wight.\n\nThe Southsea Seafront stretch is a mix of cycle path\, quie t road and a busy stretch in front of South Parade Pier\, before again usin g the dedicated seafront cycle route to Eastney\, where we stop for a well earned extended coffee (and cake) break at the Coffee Cup Cafe.\n\nAfter co ffee\, we continue East along the seafront cycle route onto a short busier stretch of road\, before again turning onto the permissive cycle route at B ransbury Park. A couple of minor roads takes us to the bus corridor onto th e seafront of Milton Common and the new sea defence path north\, eventually reaching the Anchorage Park entrance\, where we follow the cycle path alon gside the Eastern Road to the Farlington Marshes roundabout.\n\nThis is a b usy and often noisy point\, but we take the dedicated cycle routes safely a cross the roundabout and the combined walk and cycle path north until we tu rn left into Grove Road. This road continues getting quieter as we go until reaching Cosham High Street and the railway gates. Acclaimed for the beauty of its route\, along scenic minor roads\, on a circuit of the New Forest adorned in its bright patchwork of stunning au tumn colours.\nFollowing last years success we again offer the choice of tw o routes. The original ‘Classic 100k’\, designed to appeal to cyclists of a wide range of abilities and the inaugural ‘Challenge 100 mile’ - a much mo re demanding ride for the experienced cyclist.\nBoth routes use the same st art/finish and the same two controls/halls along the route. This means that you can ‘mix and match’ the two routes. If you have started on the ‘Challe nge 100 mile’ route and feel knackered by the time you reach the 2nd contro l\, continue on the shorter ‘Classic 100k’. Conversely\, if you have starte d on the ‘Classic 100k’ and feel mighty strong at the 2nd control\, you can continue on the longer and more challenging ‘Challenge 100 mile’. The choi ce is entirely yours\, just ensure you are capable of cycling whichever dis tance you choose.
