Synopsis

Meet at 08h15 at Havant Spring Centre for an 08h30 departure; back in Havant around 17h30. Route statistics are:

(Click the image above to enlarge)

We cross the Downs at Amberley and recross through the Adur gap, then we follow the coast back home; hence using the 1% threshold this isn't a hilly ride. Click the map link above to see a map of the route and to download a gpx file if required.

Notes:
[1] We use the Downs Link for 20 km which is mostly unsurfaced with a few short stony sections where you will be pleased you aren't riding delicate racing tyres (but any bike will be fine).
[2] There are bail-out opportunities at various railway stations on the way back, from Shoreham (at km 90) onwards.

About Tuesday rides

The Tuesday rides are typically 60-80 miles at a moderately fast pace while maintaining the social nature of the Saturday and Wednesday rides. The rides will start at various locations to be determined by the individual ride leader.

  1. Hi John, I don't think I'll be able to join you on this ride due to still recovering from a virus. But a note to any riders: I did the Downs Link bit this ride is using just 2 weks ago and can attest to the surface as John describes it - it is rough and loose in places and I was riding with 50mm tyres and did so with caution. If you go on 23c/25c, do make sure you have spare tubes to hand - I stopped to help a guy riding 25c Gatorskins who had a puncture and offered to help but both front and rear were flat and after 5 puncture that day, he was waiting for a lift home.

    1. Sorry you won't be joining us Alan. When I did a recce ride I too was riding 50mm tyres and had no problems; there were a few people riding carbon fibre road bikes on narrow tyres who were proceeding cautiously and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I'll be riding 25 mm tyres on the 24th and I'll be picking my path carefully on the rough bits, but I'm not expecting to provoke punctures; it'll be slow going for a few short sections, but on the upside the views are great and you get that lovely sense of being remote from motor traffic 🙂

      1. Hello John, I will be able to attend tomorrows ride, previously I thought I had a diary conflict. I have spent this morning fitting some tired Duranos to my bike in response to yours and the Gravel Master's (Alan) comments on the off road section. See you in the morning. Clive

        1. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow Clive. The weather forecast is good(ish); the headwind on the way home might prove challenging, we'll have to see how it feels ...

Ime duranos are an excellent choice; I've ridden a pair for thousands of kilometres, they collected loads of cuts but very few p*!#¥√¶es over all manner of surfaces until I eventually lost confidence and allowed them a more gentle retirement.
