Epic – Following the route of Dave’s 1995 ride to Gibbet Hill, Hindhead.

The ride includes 2 sections of rough stuff. The first is a Byway from Haslemere to Gibbet Hill, it’s very rough and will involve some walking. You can bypass this section if you wish, although you’ll be missing some of the spirit of the ride. The second is a short section of woodland track leaving Hindhead and is easily rideable.

Another long all day summer ride to Winchester.
Unlikely other recent rides, I have graded this as hilly as between coffee and lunch its pretty unrelenting - see metres ascent.

We'll go via Rowlands, Horndean and Old Winchester Hill to West Meon for Elevenses (17 miles) then on through Cheriton, Alresford, Ovington and Winnall into Winchester for lunch (further 16 miles)

Return through Twyford, Owlesbury and Bishops Waltham (possible tea/ice- cream stop).

Total distance 63 miles.

Forecast looks Ok at the moment. If it changes I may change the ride.

We will start from our B&B Hotel, Ouistreham, near Caen and head south to cross the current Pegasus bridge. Then east to Troarn, for coffee in a cafe or tabac. Lunch nearby, then we'll retrace back to Ouistreham, giving total distance of 44 miles.

A flat, easy paced (approx 3 hours, 18 mile) scenic loop around Langstone Harbour. A ride designed for those returning to cycling. Heading out towards Havant and the Billy Trail on Hayling Island, we will stay, where possible, on shared cycle paths, off road tracks and quiet roads. A coffee and cake stop (or ice cream) on Hayling sea front and an opportunity to take some photos before heading towards the Hayling ferry and a ferry ride to Portsmouth. (£4 ) Continuing along the eastern side of Portsmouth on the Solent Way we will finish our ride back at Farlington Marshes.

This is a Return To Cycling (RTC) ride for new riders. CTC Centenary Camping Trip - Tuesday, 9th June, 2026

This ride starts from the Stowford Manor Farm Campsite at 09.30 and we make our way to the 2 Tunnels Greenway via Bradford on Avon. We pass Midford Castle (once owned by Nicolas Cage, the actor). Coombe Down tunnel is just over one mile long and is the UK's longest cycling and walking tunnel, and is heightened by the extraordinary audio-visual installation, ‘Passage’ by United Visual Artists.

Although the tunnel is lit, please bring lights so that other users can see you, then through the Devonshire Tunnel, which is not as long, then onto Bath for coffee.

We then head south and make our way to Midsomer Norton through some pretty villages for lunch at Jacarandas, returning back to the campsite via Radstock.

Solsbury Hill – Evening Ride

“Solsbury Hill was written shortly after Peter left Genesis. He was inspired to write it after meditating at Little Solsbury Hill in Somerset”

The site of an Iron Age Hill Fort, Solsbury Hill is to the North East of Bath and has commanding views over the city.

On last years Mendips trip we stopped at the location during one of our rides. As Stowford Manor is reasonably close by I thought it would be even better to pay an evening visit so we can see the City Lights. I can’t promise an Eagle flying out of the Night, but who knows?

The Plan:

Sunset on Tues 9^th June is 21:16hr

The ride to Solsbury Hill is approx. 17Km from the campsite, so leaving about 7.15pm should get us there for 8:15pm.

I’ll take my camping stoves and cook some frankfurter hot dogs (with onions, ketchup, etc.) Bring your own beer or soft drinks.

We’ll wait to see the city lights come on, and then head home. Expect to get back to the campsite around 10pm-10.30pm

Route out:

There are two options both the same distance. Road route easier cycling, but hillier and with traffic. Following the Canal is slower going but flatter and traffic free.

My preference is the canal route providing we have not had rain prior to the ride.

The final 2Km is all up hill – no surprise really, and the last 300m Solsbury Lane going up to the fort is particularly steep.

Route back:

We’ll take a road route back via Bradford on Avon, you will need lights.

For anyone wanting to come by car I recall there were a small number of parking places at the top of Solsbury Lane. A better option might be to park in Batheaston and take one of the various footpaths to the top of the hill.

In addition to beer and bike lights I suggest bringing a warm jacket, a hat and leg warmers as it will get colder after sunset.

A short & flat 5 mile ride (8.6Km) with a purpose and chance to be part of PCTC history

Starting at Farlington Marshes we will follow the cycle route down to Milton Common, then head over to Garnier Street.

This was the location of the Co-operative rooms where PCTC was formed 100 years ago & is now an Asda store car park.

We'll stop here for group photos. Please wear PCTC kit, traditional or centenary, a mix of both will be ideal, if you don't have a PCTC jersey let me know and we can loan you one for the photo.

Photos completed we'll brave a cycle ride through Portsmouth for elevenses at the Cafe in the Park. The ride ends here so plan your own route out of Portsmouth and home.

This ride will be longer than most previous alphabet rides; 40 miles Spring to Spring, hence all day, with 3 refreshment stops.
There are many undulations, with climbing totalling 1,480 feet, although no hills are steep.
After coffee at Lavant we'll take the Centurion Way to West Dean and continue through Singleton then east through Charlton and East Dean. Left at the junction and ride half a mile north on the A285 to the Upwaltham Church sign for our customary group photo. Next, head back south on the A285, taking 1st right, CARE NEEDED, back to Singleton and lunch at the open-air museum cafe.
We rerurn via Lavant, West Stoke and Funtington, with tea stop at Woodmancote PH.
We'll arrive back at The Spring probably around 6pm.

Dave Culverwell Memorial Ride

This is an afternoon and evening ride, and also a ride in the PCTC Epic Series

We will be using the route of Club Ride which Dave led in July 1995

Depart Havant Spring 1pm

Afternoon Tea at Aylings Trotton 18 miles (30Km)

Then onto Hazelemere and Hindhead 12miles (. This section of the ride has exciting climbs, including a section of off road byway to take us up to Gibbet Hill, where we will stop for a drink & snack, and to admire the views across to London.

From here we will drop down to Hindhead, where we have a second section of rough stuff, and work our way down to The Queens Head at Sheet, 17 miles (28Km)

We're aiming to arrive around 7pm and meet up with the ACP Pompey Wednesday Pub Ride.

The Queens Head has outside seating and serve some excellent Pizzas.

The ride finishes here, so plan your own ride home, there will almost certainly be others going your way. Sunset is 9.20pm, so while you will need lights it shouldn't be too dark.

If you prefer to get the train home, Petersfield station is a 10 min bike ride.

Chase the Sun - shorter and slower - 19-21 June, 2026

Friday, 19th June: We start from Havant. We then cycle to Tunbridge Wells West Dean, 76 miles, and stay at The Mercure Hotel. Stopping along the way for coffee/lunch stops. The speed will be approx 10-11 mph throughout the 3 days and will be a relaxing tour.

Saturday, 20th June: We then set off from Tunbridge Wells and cycle to Eastbourne (32 miles). There is a lot of choice of hotels at Eastbourne at roughly £65/night. Option for swim after the cycle ride. Evening meal in the town - there are lots of restaurants/cafes etc. As this is crossing the High Weald, there will be some hills, but I will avoid where possible any steep hills. Hotel for Eastbourne is: Afton Hotel.

Sunday, 21st June: From Eastbourne we cycle back home to Havant (70 miles) - obviously this is a flat route as it is along the coast. However, if anyone is tired, then there is the option to catch a train at the many railway stations on the way back.

Both hotels above are happy to take bikes. Hotel bookings will be down to individuals to book, and I would suggest using booking.com as you do not have to pay upfront, also go for free cancellation and if you use your mobile to book, it comes out slightly cheaper.

A ride of twelve miles. A pleasant route along cycle paths and lanes to the quieter lanes south of the A259, we will wind our way to Bosham at a comfortable pace for all. Approaching from the south, there will be far reaching views of Bosham Quay and a photo opportunity, before making our way to Wendy’s for coffee and cake. Duly refreshed, we head north on quiet lanes, cross the A259 and return to the Westgate Leisure Centre using mainly cycle paths or lanes. With a half nine start we will be back for half twelve latest. If you want to get back out there on your bike then this is the ride for you!

During the planning and research for our Centenary year and PCTC book we have discovered the names and details of eight members of Hampshire Road Club and Portsmouth CTC DA who lost their lives in World War 2.

Three of these young men are listed on the Naval War Memorial at Southsea, and we have also located the resting place or memorials of the other five.

All members of Portsmouth CTC, but especially those who are Armed Forces Veterans, have links to the military or who lost family members in either World War or other conflicts are invited to join us to remember our past members.

We’ll meet at the Naval War Memorial, Southsea at 09:45hrs

There will a few words spoken, and a poem followed by one minute silence and contemplation.

Afterwards we’ll take some photographs as record of the event and then proceed to the Driftwood Café for coffee and cake.

With a hint that summer may finally be on its way, it’s time to start looking ahead. This year’s New Forest Family Cycling Week will run from Friday 24th July to Saturday 1st August 2026. It may feel a long way off, but now is the perfect moment to get it in the diary and start looking forward to another memorable summer.

For those who have been before, you’ll know exactly what makes the week so special. For anyone new, it’s a relaxed, welcoming gathering where people of all ages and abilities come together to enjoy cycling, fresh air, and good company. Whether you’re a keen rider, a casual cyclist, or simply prefer a gentle walk and a picnic, there is always something to enjoy.

Days tend to take on a rhythm of their own. There are scenic rides through the forest, longer outings for those who want to stretch their legs, and plenty of opportunities for beach trips, paddling and crabbing. Along the way there are picnics, wildlife spotting, and the all-important ice cream stops. Back at camp, games, quizzes and children’s races bring everyone together, while the evenings offer a chance to relax, laugh and enjoy everything from informal gatherings to the ever-popular barn dance.

What really makes the week work, though, is the people. The rally is entirely volunteer-led, and its character comes from those who take part. Rides are led by whoever is keen to share a route, activities happen because someone has an idea and runs with it, and everyone contributes in their own way. It’s not about perfection, but about creating something inclusive, flexible and friendly that everyone can be part of.

We will once again be based in the rally field at Hurst View Leisure Campsite in Pennington, which has become a much-loved home for the week. You can book your stay direct with them in advance if you prefer to plan ahead, or simply arrive and join us. Either way, you’ll find a warm welcome. Please mention the cycling rally when booking.

If you enjoy the week, the best way to help it grow is simply to spread the word. Invite friends, bring family members, and encourage anyone who might be curious about cycling or camping to come along. Many people join for the first time not knowing quite what to expect, and quickly become part of the group.

New Forest Family Cycling Week has always been about keeping things simple, open and enjoyable. It may not be polished, but that is very much part of its charm. It is a chance to switch off, spend time outdoors, and share a week of small adventures and good company.

We hope to see many familiar faces again this summer, and plenty of new ones too. For now, save the date and start the countdown.

Three Day Cycle Camping Trip

Old School CTC style

• Day 1 – Cycle to Lymington via Hursley & Carlos Tea Rooms, approx 100KmWe’ll be camping at Hurst View as part of the New Forest Cycling Week & will join other PCTC members who are there for the week.

  Fish and Chip Supper

• Day 2 – leaving camping kit at the site, New Forest Cycle Ride, Ashurst for late breakfast, then Annies Tea Rooms for her legendary Cream Tea.
• Day 3 – Head back to Portsmouth via Isle of Wight Route

There is plenty of room in the camping field, so don’t book your pitch until the week before, that way we can consider rescheduling if weather is inclement.

New Forest Gridiron entry

Join us in the 33rd running of the iconic ‘GridIron 100’.

One of the oldest on-road Cycle Randonnée’s in the UK. Acclaimed for the beauty of its route, along scenic minor roads, on a circuit of the New Forest adorned in its bright patchwork of stunning autumn colours.

Following last years success we again offer the choice of two routes. The original ‘Classic 100k’, designed to appeal to cyclists of a wide range of abilities and the inaugural ‘Challenge 100 mile’ - a much more demanding ride for the experienced cyclist.

Both routes use the same start/finish and the same two controls/halls along the route. This means that you can ‘mix and match’ the two routes. If you have started on the ‘Challenge 100 mile’ route and feel knackered by the time you reach the 2nd control, continue on the shorter ‘Classic 100k’. Conversely, if you have started on the ‘Classic 100k’ and feel mighty strong at the 2nd control, you can continue on the longer and more challenging ‘Challenge 100 mile’. The choice is entirely yours, just ensure you are capable of cycling whichever distance you choose. Aim to enjoy it!

Chase the Sun Tour 2027

Two days of gentle touring to Kent, then on Sunday, the years longest day, a long(er) distance ride chasing the sun back to Portsmouth.

Day 1 – Midhurst & then across the High Weald with an overnight stop in the vicinity of Tunbridge Wells. Distance approx. 120Km

Day 2 - onwards to Ramsgate (or maybe Dover), 120Km

Day 3 – OUR BIG DAY CHASING THE SUN - Starting at sunrise(ish) 04:51hrs, well take a coastal route back to Portsmouth, aiming to arrive back at 21:22hrs. A distance of approx. 260Km (160 miles), so easily do-able in 17 ½ hrs, and plenty of time for stops to eat and drink along the way.

Options for overnight stay are camping or B&B, we can decide this and our routes once we know who is riding.
